Our team at L&S Site Contractor has worked on a wide range of projects over the years, including everything from land clearing to landfill remediation. In this article, we will focus on our landfill remediation efforts, providing a brief introduction to what they involve and how they work.
- What is Landfill Remediation? To put it simply, landfill remediation is the process of taking old landfills and transforming them back into usable land for real estate development, parkland, or other uses. There are fewer and fewer large tracts of vacant, geographically desirable land available, so developers are looking to take advantage of reclaimed landfills and similar sites.
- What Does Landfill Remediation Involve? Landfill remediation is more complicated than simply covering the piled-up trash with sod and calling it a day. First, our team must compact all the accumulated waste as densely as possible to create a low, level base for the eventual reclaimed land. This process of compaction also ensures the newly reclaimed or created land will be stable instead of shifting as the trash moves around. Second, we need to install systems to mitigate the off-gasses from landfill waste. This typically involves installing barriers under all inhabited buildings (including offices and other facilities where people work) as well as perforated pipes to capture and divert gases into the atmosphere.
